"Salts of the Earth"
Patricia and Gene, off the beaten path of Route 66, inhabit a section rarely seen by the average tourist.
While many travellers experience the revitalized, Disneyfied stretches of Route 66, there are forgotten parts where the road has reverted to dirt and road signs have vanished.
This is where I stumbled upon Patricia and Gene, tending their vegetable garden. They were surprised to see someone venturing into their remote corner of Route 66 but were delighted to chat for half an hour.
The true treasures of the historic highway are often hidden from view, lacking the familiar fast-food chains, but offering genuine historical charm in all its quaintness.
